Royal Rachel Schoonover-Jones

Royal Rachel Jones passed away Wednesday, January 22, 2020 following a short illness in Nampa, Idaho.

She was born on November 14, 1922 to Chester and Louise B. in Hazelton, North Dakota. She was the youngest of four children. She attended school in Hazelton and later moved to Bismark, North Dakota. She met and married Donivan (Don) Schoonover on December 29, 1949. Don was in the US Air Force at the time. Their family included Douglas, Bonnie, and Curtis. They were transferred to several Air Forces Bases during the next 17 years (North Dakota, New Mexico, Florida, Montana, and California.) When Don retired from the Air Force in 1966, the family made their home in Boise, Idaho. Royal and Don later divorced.

 Royal attended ITT in 1977 and worked as a bookkeeper in Meridian until she retired. Royal later met Art Jones and they were married October 5, 1990, making their home in Nampa, Idaho.   

Royal loved to play bingo and go on trips to Jackpot, Nevada. Through the years, she was very active with bowling, fishing, knitting, crocheting, oil painting, quilting, and traveling. She proudly won many awards with her artistic and crafting skills. She was active in the El Korah Shrine Eastern Star, El Korah Shrine Daughters of the Nile, Elks Lodge, and Eagle Lodge.

Royal is survived by her two sons, Douglas (JoAnn) Schoonover of Nampa, ID and Curtis (Maryann) Schoonover of Emmett, ID; three grandchildren, Seth Geniesse, Harmony Schoonover, and Gage Slaughter; step-grandchildren, and several great grandchildren. 

She is preceded in death by her parents; husbands; daughter, Bonnie Slaughter; brothers, Alfred and Hugo; and sister, Ester Horst.

We would like to thank the staff at Genesis Sunnyridge in Nampa for their kindness and compassionate care of mom. 

Services will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2020 at 11:00 AM at the Alsip and Persons Funeral Chapel (404 10th Ave. South, Nampa, Idaho) with a viewing just prior to services, from 10:00 to 11:00 AM.  Interment will be held at Morris Hill Cemetery in Boise and following graveside services, the family welcomes guests to a dinner in Royal’s honor.
