Tribute

George Irl Chansler
10/11/1926 – 11/5/2020

George “Irl” Chansler passed away on Thursday, November 5, 2020, in Nampa, Idaho, following a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Irl was born October 11, 1926 just 30 minutes after his twin brother Merle, to Perry and Marie Chansler in Brea, California. Irl was the youngest of 5 children born to Perry and Marie.
Irl attended school in Brea, graduating from the Brea-Olinda Union High School in 1944. He entered the Navy, joining the V12 program for officer training. He attended college at University of California in Berkeley, fitting his education in alongside his military training. After World War II ended, Irl transferred to UCLA, graduating in 1948. He began his teaching career in Redlands, CA, teaching Math and Science to Junior High School students. Irl was called back to active duty in the Navy during the Korean Conflict. When he returned home from his service he started teaching in San Bernardino, CA.
Irl met the love of his life, Naomi Koger, at the Redlands Nazarene Church. They were married on March 10, 1951. They made their home in Redlands, CA., where they lived for 30 years. Irl was very active in the Redlands Nazarene Church, serving on the Church Board, and teaching a Sunday School class for many years. Irl and Naomi had 3 children: Rene Chansler, Steven Chansler, and Kristie Chansler Moore.
During this time, Irl completed his Master’s Degree at USC, and earned his Administrative Credential. He was appointed Boy’s Dean at Highland Junior High in 1957, and thus embarked on a truly successful career as a Junior High School Dean, Vice Principal and Principal. His tenure as an educator spanned over 38 years, working at five different middle school campuses, all with Middle School students! He deserved a medal!
After retiring in 1988, Irl and Naomi moved to Hesperia, CA, to be near their kids and grandchildren. He began his second teaching career working in the Hesperia Unified School District as a substitute teacher in the Independent Study program for an additional 18 years. The love of teaching must have rubbed off, because all 3 of his children became teachers as well! They had an excellent role model!!!
Irl made the most of his retirement. He loved caring for his yard and was especially proud of his beautiful roses in the front yard. He actively maintained his house and yard for almost 30 years. He attended the Hesperia Nazarene Church for 30 years, teaching the adult Sunday School class for over 25 years. He and Naomi enjoyed traveling in their travel trailer. They especially loved camping at Yosemite National Park. Many wonderful memories were made during those camping trips with family.
Irl thoroughly enjoyed the title of “Papa” and his time spent with his 4 grandchildren. They were the joy of his life. All four grandkids lived close to Papa and Grammy, and were able to spend quality time together creating memories that bring comfort to them to this day. As those grandkids grew, Papa was an active participant in each of their lives, whether it was sports, school, music concerts, birthdays, graduations, weddings and great-grand kids!
Irl was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Naomi Chansler, and by his oldest daughter, Rene’ Chansler. Irl is survived by son, Steven (Sharon) Chansler, of Nampa, Idaho, and daughter, Kristie (Charles) Moore, of Hesperia, California, along with 4 grandchildren, Bryan (Heather) Chansler, Stephanie (Robert) Boetjer, Kyle (Nicole) Chansler and Tyler Moore, as well as 7 precious great-grandchildren: Alexis, Kenzie, Harrison, Logan, Violet, Samuel and Lainey. Irl is also survived by his sister, Jennie Phillips and his twin brother, Merle Chansler, as well as many nieces and nephews all across the country. He will be interred at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, California.
A special thank you to the wonderful caregivers at Keystone Hospice for their compassionate and tender service to Irl during the last several months of his life. The staff at both Park Place Assisted Living and the Family Life Memory care facilities also provided excellent care during this long goodbye.
We all love you and miss you terribly, but are comforted by the fact that you were a strong Christian who loved the Lord and are in Heaven with those who have gone before you. We are confident that the moment you took your last breath, you heard the Lord speak these words, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant!” Say “Hi” to Mom and Rene’ and give them hugs for us. We love you!
