I just learned of the passing of this most wonderful teacher today, in 2019. I never had an instructor who knew his material more thoroughly or shared it with a more sincere passion. His hands would join with his words as he described the anatomy of an organ and its relationships in the body, leaning in, fully immersed in the subject and using every expression to paint the image in our minds. When he had given it everything he had, he would finally relax, take a breath, and sometimes say, "Now if you didn't get that, I'll say it again, slower" Slower was all he could offer, because after all that, he coldn't say it any better. That was 40 years ago. I guess he made an impression.

Dr. Lewellen definitely was a prime role model when I started my career teaching at a chiropractic college. He consistently defined the terms "grace", "compassion" and "equanimity" for so many students during the course of his career. His memory will live on.

My first impressions of Palmer were Mr. Lewellen. I was from Idaho and a long way from home. We always had something to talk about. I think we both really felt like Idaho was home. Great man and a great example of the kind of doctor I wanted to be. My mother is showing signs of Alzheimer's and my grandfather passed away from the same thing. Its tough to watch. As I am sure everyone is saying that it was truly our pleasure to have know Mr. Lewellen and thanks for calling me doctor even before I knew I could be a doctor. Many blessings on your family.

What is blessing to share three special grandchildren with Gale and Janice. It was always a joy to get together for family milestone events. If things got a little hectic as they often do, I remember Gale would just say, “I think I will take a little walk.”

I always enjoyed quiet visits with Gale at these events, when he would share his views on a variety of subjects. I particularly remember one such event around the time of the Nauvoo Temple Dedication. He related how the coming of a Temple had such a positive effect on the area where it is built. He went on the share how it had directly influenced the members of his stake.

When they talked about him, it was easy to see how much the grandkids loved and looked up to their Grandpa. I can picture him having a private conversation with each of the kids. He shared his love, encouragement and Gospel insights with them. They can always look to his positive example of a true disciple Christ.

I remember one occasion we had come a few days before the big event and the kids were excited for the other grandparents to arrive. Eli came to us and told us that we would have to find another place to sleep because we were staying in Popi and Papa’s room. Amy had already made the necessary arrangements, but clearly Eli was concerned.

We not only gained a daughter in law with Jon’s marriage to Amy but a wonderful extended family.

Gale Lewellen was one of the kindest and loving people I have ever known. I had the privilege of working for him at Palmer College. I was always amazed by his attitude and compassion toward his students. He took joy in their successes and felt for them when they failed. His love for them was always evident. I loved sitting in his office talking with him and learning from him. I remember in class he wouldn't just sit at the front and lecture, he would read the class and discern their needs. Often he ended class early because he could tell that the class was not engaged and could not take in any more information. When he retired as a teacher, a group of students asked alumni to share experiences. They received hundreds of responses and had a few thousand people join an online group. Gale was loved by many and his love to others was an example to us all, especially how much he loved his wife and family. "God be with you 'til we meet again".

Mr. Lewelen was the very first teacher I had at Palmer. We often said he was a combination of Jimmy Stewart and Mr. Rogers. He was always a joy to be around, even at 7:30 in the morning. My favorite thing he said: “The only thing bars are good for is ice.” May he Rest In Peace! Prayers to the family

Gale was one of the sweetest spirits I've encountered in this life and I was honored to be his friend. He was a teacher in the broadest sense - some will say anatomy was his specialty, but many others will say he taught us how to live this life and prepare for eternity. He was humble, kind and loving to all. All who knew him were bettered by the experience and, while we will miss him, look forward to the day when we will see each other again.

A person often wonders what are friends are doing as our journey in life soon passes. Mr. Gale Lewellen had an extra gift that he passed on to everyone that knew him and touch all of us. His class was one of the most important at Palmer and he wanted us all to learn . He knew how to help us all. It' has been 35 years ago since I graduated, but I still enjoy the memories of him teaching all of us. Now my Daughter is attending and will graduate soon. It's wonderful that our paths crossed and made so many lasting memories.

He was one of the best teachers I ever had! He loved the subject matter that he taught, and instilled that love in his students. He was a good story teller and could make difficult material very understandable. He made the world around him better. His legacy lives on every day in every chiropractic office of his students.

Thank you for being a great teacher, friend and mentor. I'm not a morning person, but I always loved being in your morning classes. As a high school chemistry teacher I try to show my kids the love and respect that you showed to the thousands that toy habe taught. I am grateful to have been able to talk with you and your amazing Janice about life as a non-traditional parent. I leaned on your teachings greatly. You helped me see that there wasn't anything wrong with "me"... the Lord just needed someone to bring kids in and love them. Thank you for being the example of a Foster Parent, Child of God, teacher, Dad, husband and friend.

I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Lewellan’s passing. My prayers and sincerest condolences to his family.
I am a graduate of the first class of 1995. I distinctly remember my first class at Palmer. I was a nervous 20 year old kid, unfamilar with all of my surroundings, including the country, since I’m from Canada. Sitting in that theatre waiting for the clock to get around to 7:30, we were all striking up awkward conversations with the strangers around us. Not sure of what to expect, I was not prepared for what I saw when class finally began. This quiet, obviously mild mannered voice filled the room and everyone was silent. Here was this man at the front of the class on that stage that I recall thinking knew exactly where I was at and what was going on in my head. Here I was at the very beginning of a long, arduous journey that was to become my career. I was stepping over the threshold into an entirely new chapter in my life and he knew it. I can recall being completely stunned at this quiet, unassuming man, standing in front of all of us students on this nerve wracking morning, telling stories!! Not just any stories, hilarious stories! And jokes, to go along with them!! In those moments, I remember thinking, everything’s going to be ok. Things are going to work out just fine and yes, you can do this.
Mr, Lewellan had that way of stepping into a room and instantly making everyone feel at ease. Not just that, but that you deserved to be there, that each and everyone in that room belonged there and had every right to succeed. I’ve never known another like him.
Since my school career has ended, I’ve been asked numerous times who the best teacher I ever had was. My answer has always come without hesitation, it’s really no contest. He impacted my life in ways I cannot explain as I know he did many others before and after my time at Palmer.
Once again, my prayers and deepest sympathies are extended to his family at this time. May the comforting hand of God console you as only He can. We will meet again, someday.

We are grateful for our brief time of close association with Gale in Oklahoma. He provided a great service to the young adults as LDSSA president. His influence with the students and young adults was significant and contributed greatly to whatever success the Institute program achieved in the lives of individuals. He was warm, open and exemplary in every way.
Gale was a wonderful fried to our family. Our children always enjoyed having him come to our home and he was always willing to assist us even to the extent of providing overnight care for our six young children. Once he responded quickly to a middle of the night call while we went to the hospital for the birth of a baby.
As we reminisce on our association with students and young adults in Norman, Gale is always one of our favorite people.
We send our love.

I never knew Dr. Gale Lewellen, but appreciate all the work he has done with Chiropractic students. It is a good life to forever have someone praise your hard work. As a Chiropractor, I hope to reach at least his age, but nearly didn't due to a cerebellar haemorrhage. AKA Stroke. It took something like that to wake me up and work for the profession as a whole. Thank you for your service to the profession, Dr Gale Lewellen.
