Edith Grant, Fruitland, Idaho, passed away on the way to the hospital in Boise on July 7, 2017 at the age of 94. She was born in Gooding, Idaho on October 12, 1922 to Ben and Elsie Hancock. She was the youngest with three brothers and two sisters. Her parents had come to Idaho from Arkansas for her father to work on one of the early canals in Idaho while her mom cooked for the crew.  They later farmed in Gooding, Wendell and Melba.  Edith attended school in Melba until her senior year and then graduated from Jerome High School where she moved after her father died.

In 1940 she married Kenneth D. Grant. Kenny worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for forty-two years.  During that time Ken and Edith lived in Glenns Ferry, Nampa, Ontario, Fruitland and Huntington.  Kenny was the roundhouse foreman at Huntington and when he retired he was the last permanent employee of Union Pacific in Huntington.

They raised their four children on ten acres near Fruitland. After Kenny retired from the railroad in 1979, they bought, owned and operated the general store and cafe in Ryderwood, Washington.  They sold the store and retired again in 1989.  In 2004, they moved back to Ontario.  They were married seventy-one years when Kenny died in 2012. At the time of her death, Edith was living with her daughter in Fruitland.

Edith started her working life as a carhop at Murray’s Restaurant in Boise.  In addition to raising their four children, she worked at the Moore Hotel in Ontario for many years and then was a lunchroom lady, working in the Fruitland School lunchroom. She was Den Mother to almost every Cub Scout in Fruitland during the 1950’s.. After she and Kenny moved to Ryderwood, she ran the restaurant and became famous for her homemade pies. Ken and Edith loved dancing all their lives. They were life-long members of the Ontario Christian Church.

Edith is survived by her children, Jerry and Irene Grant of Boise, Charlene Grant, Larry and Pam Grant, and Lowell and Coleen Grant, all of Fruitland.  She had thirteen grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren, and twenty-seven great-great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents, all of her brothers and sisters, and one grandchild.

Edith requested that she not have a funeral, but the family may hold a memorial service at a later date.  In lieu of flowers or gifts, please make a donation to your favorite charity or Ontario Christian Church.
